I didn't discover saunas through a wellness influencer or a Wirecutter listicle. I discovered them the old-fashioned way: living in Finland and Sweden, where refusing a sauna invitation is borderline rude and 90-year-old locals still use one almost every day, and genuinely seem fine about it. If a 92-year-old Finn who still chops his own wood taught me anything, it's this: the best sauna is the one you actually use.

The landmark Kuopio study (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015) followed 2,315 Finnish men for roughly 20 years and found that those using a sauna 4 to 7 times per week had a 40% lower risk of all-cause mortality, a 50% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease, and a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared to once-weekly users. These are observational associations, not proof of causation, but the dose-response pattern is striking. The Finns I watched using saunas at 90 weren't doing anything exotic. They were doing what their parents did, four or five times a week, for their whole lives.

Among the major brands, only a handful publish a named lab, a specific reading, a described method, and a seated-position measurement. Owner review aggregation. I systematically read owner feedback across Reddit's r/sauna and r/infraredsauna communities and Amazon verified purchases, not to cherry-pick praise but to find patterns. A single one-star review might be an outlier. Twenty owners across two platforms reporting the same chemical off-gassing from a budget model, or the same unanswered warranty claim, is a signal. The most consistent complaints I've found: underestimating 240V installation cost (a real range of $300 to $2,500 depending on panel distance and whether a panel upgrade is needed), buying a “2-person” sauna that fits one adult comfortably, chemical smell from low-grade composite wood or adhesives in budget infrared models, and warranty claims that go unanswered from brands without US service networks.

I haven't physically tested every model on this site. I say so clearly on the methodology page and won't pretend otherwise. What I have done is apply the same systematic research process I use for clinical health studies, because for a $3,000 to $12,000 purchase you deserve more than a repackaged press release.
